Research in Computing and Mathematics

Research in the School of Computing and Mathematics takes place in three areas: (i) Applied Mathematics; (ii) Computer Science; and (iii) Applied Probability, Operational Research, and Statistics.

In Applied Mathematics, the broad areas of research are fluid dynamics, solid dynamics, and wave theory, with particular emphasis on geophysical fluid dynamics, biomechanics, sound and vibration, and stability. The Applied Mathematics research staff are Professors Chapman, Fu, Rogerson, and Shrira, and Drs Annenkov, Blyuss, Healey, Heckl, and Naire, who are all members of the Research Institute for the Environment, Physical Sciences, and Applied Mathematics. Potential research students are invited to contact Professor Fu at any time for an informal discussion.

In Computer Science, the research areas are Computational Intelligence and Cognitive Science (CICS), Knowledge Modelling and Software Engineering. The Computer Science research staff for CICS are Drs Channon, Day, Fletcher, Kyriacou, Lam, Neligwa and Thomason. The research staff for Knowledge Modelling are Dr Rugg and Ed de Quincey. The research staff for Software Engineering are Professors Brereton and Kitchenham, Drs Niazi and Turner and Stephen Linkman. Potential research students may contact ... for an informal discussion.

In Applied Probablity and Operational Research, the main research area is applied queueing theory (Dr Preater), and in Statistics the main research area is Medical Statistics (Dr Jones). Potential research students should contact Dr Preater or Dr Jones.

We have highly rated research in a number of fields, focussed around 6 Research Groups.
